Nick Burgoyne - Offerings and Shrines
Throughout Bali, beautiful artisan-made offerings are seen everywhere. Find them on the streets, on temples, on the shores of lakes and the ocean, nailed to walls and resting in alcoves. They are most frequently made by the ladies of each household but for those who are too busy, they can be purchased ready made, or in 'kit form' from local shops and traditional markets.
They can be made from anything but usually contain pandan and palm leaves, flowers and small fancy decorations and a token of modernity such as a cigarette, coin and frequently little biscuits. Once The Gods and Spirits have imbibed the spiritual essence, they are consumed by dogs, insects and sometimes, small children!
